Advice On Engine Fitment

Installation The engine installation must be carried out by a fitter who is fully conversant with this type of Triumph engine, otherwise the guarantee is null & void. Engine failures & mechanical faults which occur shortly after installation have, in the past, proven to be related to incorrect installation.

Oil Priming Prior to initial start-up the oil pressure must be built up. We suggest disconnecting the plug leads and spinning the engine for at least 60 seconds

Oil Filters For element type filters you must ensure that the oil filter canister, washers, springs & bolt are fitted in the correct order. The filter canister and/or bowl/element must be filled with new oil before mounting onto the engine. Note that engine failures in the past have been related to the use of "pattern" or incorrect filters being fitted, especially those produced without a non-return valve. Our warranty requires that only correct & original filters be used.

Oil Type A quality oil of 20/50 specification must be used. We use & recommend Castrol Classic oil.

Oil Consumption It is important for owners to remember that that "oil consumption" is a feature of all triumph engines, and that between service intervals and oil changes the oil will require topping up regularly. Oil consumption should not be compared with today’s modern engines.

Steam Cleaning The engine unit may have been externally steam cleaned to facilitate delivery & handling. In this instance there may be internal water vapour & droplets. After a short period a sludge or "mayonnaise" will form on the oil filler cap. To alleviate this we would recommend changing the oil & filter after the engine has been run for at least 30 minutes or driven for 50 miles.

Ignition The ignition timing must be set correctly before initial start-up, severe damage will otherwise occur.

Water Pump We recommend that a new water pump be fitted

Radiator Your radiator must be new or in very good condition. If in any doubt have it checked by a specialist. Introducing water via a hosepipe at one end of the radiator and observing water emerge at the other end is not an indication of the radiator’s ability to dissipate heat. For example the tubes of the radiator may be partially blocked by scale or sludge. The cooling system efficiency on Spitfire IV & 1500 is marginal anyway, and we would recommend the fitment of the improved full-width radiator.

Coolant Circulation You must ensure that the entire cooling/heating system is bled correctly. Do not drive the car until this operation has been carried out. Keep monitoring the coolant level when both hot & cold. Check coolant level after 1 mile on initial test run, and check the heater is working correctly. Partially blocked heater matrixes and/or collapsed hoses have been known to cause air locks and prevent correct coolant circulation, causing engine damage.

Fuel Mixture Tired/worn or incorrectly set carbs can lead to premature engine wear (rich mixture = piston & bore wear, lean mixture = valve damage). When the replacement engine has been installed the carb(s) should be set-up as per manufacturer’s instructions, and not left adjusted/set-up for a tired engine. The carbs can only be adjusted correctly if they are in good condition. Worn jets, needles and spindles must be replaced to obtain optimum performance and engine life.

Associated Fittings Engines are supplied bare i.e. without any fittings such as water pump, manifolds, backplate, rocker box etc. If any such ancillary parts are left attatched then these are supplied gratis and are not covered by the warranty. Engines are normally supplied without a sump fitted. If a sump is fitted to aid handling and delivery then this sump may be damaged or the wrong type for the engine or vehicle involved.
